    Description

1888 N332 S.F. Hess Maurice Barrymore SGC 40 VG 3. Graded 40 VG 3 by SGC, the only example graded to date by any grading service. Maurice Barrymore was born Herbert Arthur Chamberlayne Blythe on September 21, 1849. History would make him the first of the Barrymore family of actors/actresses. Today, most are familiar with his great-granddaughter, actress Drew Barrymore. Barrymore was educated in England and studied Law at Oxford University. There he played football (soccer US) and developed a taste for boxing. In 1872, he won the middleweight boxing championship of England. Much to the ire of his family, he also started acting. Not to shame the family name, took the stage name Maurice Barrymore. During his career, Barrymore performed with many noted actresses of he day, including Helena Modjeska, Lillian Russell and Lily Langtry. Barrymore died in 1905, a victim of syphilis. The formal portrait offers great detail and contrast. The slight surface loss at top and light wrinkling on the reverse do not keep this rare collectible from presenting at the EX level. A rare piece with appeal to both pugilist and non-sport hobbyists.
