Description

1888 N332 S.F. Hess John L. Sullivan SGC 40 VG 3. Graded 40 VG 3 by SGC, the only example at this grade among three total recorded (one is an "A") to date. The undisputed key entry within this extremely elusive 120 year old series. Corner wear as seen with additional chip in upper left corner. The reverse has small specs of surface loss and some edge chipping. The nicely detailed full figure portrait of the Irish heavyweight champion offers insight into the daunting task opponents faced as they bravely or foolishly entered the ring. A solid example despite condition detriments.

N332 S.F. Hess Boxers (1889)

S.F. Hess was a tobacco firm based in Rochester, New York. Taking a cue from the Old Judge line of baseball player insert cards, in 1889 Hess issued a their own line of real photo insert cards that featured boxers or pugilists from both the United States and abroad. Almost 120 years later, the exact number of subjects is still unknown. There are 86 confirmed subjects with new names being found from time to time. They are not common. Most hobbyists show just a single sample or two with only a select few advanced collections offering N332s in quantity. Heritage is proud to have this opportunity to offer an amazing 41 different subjects from this rare series. This is the largest quantity of N332 S.F. Hess boxers ever to be offered at one time via public auction.
