Description

1887 N269 Lorillard's #12 Jem Smith SGC 40 VG 3. Graded 40 VG 3 by SGC, a population 1 of 1 and the highest graded example known. One of only three total copies to receive a number grade.

N269 Lorillard's Mechanics Delight (1887)

Like so many others, this very rare series circulated in the late 1880's but is unlike most other sets of the day. From the numbered, large 2-3/8" x 3-11/16" card size, the extensive line up of pugilists, including the top fighters of the era and the brief biography of each fighter on the reverse with no space wasted by advertising are all exceptions to the rules of the era. This edition is immensely popular with boxing collectors who will passionately pursue even hand cut examples to display in their treasured collections. To the best of our knowledge the Hull Collection's 43 different boxers is the most complete set known, second only to the Burdick collection. Heritage is proud to make available some of the highest quality examples ever offered and the second highest quantity ever offered for public auction. This is not an opportunity which will be repeated in the foreseeable future.
