1887 N174 Old Judge Prizefighters Charley Mitchell SGC 10 Poor 1. From a newly discovered collection being presented for the first time. Charles Mitchell was born in Birmingham, England in 1861. He was an intelligent, crafty fighter, who often fought much larger opponents. A middleweight by stature, Mitchell often fought the leading heavyweight contenders of his era. His most famous opponent was the legendary John L. Sullivan - twice. Sullivan won the first match by a TKO in the third round. The two met again while Sullivan was on a European tour in Chantilly, France in 1888. Mitchell insisted on a large, outdoor ring where he would have room to maneuver and managed to avoid a knockout blow. Rain brought a halt to the match thirty-nine rounds and the fight was declared a draw. Excellent photo quality. Graded SGC 10 Poor 1. One of only eight graded to date by SGC.
