    Description

1886 N167 Old Judge Jem Smith, Horizontal Reverse SGC 30 Good 2. Graded 30 GD 2 by SGC. To the best of our research, this is the ONLY example of this card known in the hobby. Heritage auctions is proud to present a unique N167 Old Judge Cigarettes tobacco insert card of English Heavyweight Champion Jem Smith. The format of this collectible is the rarer second subset type which is identifiable by the horizontal format "Old Judge Cigarettes" brand advertising reverse. With the tendency to go over the top with superlatives in regards to availability, it isn't often the statement, "an even rarer variety from one of the rarest series" is wholly and justifiably appropriate. Jem Smith's career spanned 30 years but was all but over in 1897. A gruff brutish type, Jem fought both bare-knuckle (his preferred method) and with gloves. His battles were so raucous at times the police interceded on a few occasions. This secondary version portrays a full-figure illustration of Jem surrounded by a outdoor, real world environment drawn in much greater detail than the usually encountered N167 types. Arguably, this is one of the finer looking cards to be encapsulated "GD" by SGC. One slight reverse surface scuffing that does result in a pin head sized area of surface loss is evident. This is visually apparent in the upper curve of the "O" in the word "Old." The remaining dark blue ink print is deep and bold with a clear "Major, Knapp & Co. Park PL. N.Y." lithographers credit copy. There is one thin, very light horizontal crease which is seen only after the observer ceases to be enthralled by the bold fresh inks, bright white borders, largely problem free surfaces and sharp corners normally associated with cards encapsulated at the NM 7 and NM-MT 8 levels. Taking the calculated risk of tempting fate, we will add that a fresher looking example of this impossible rarity could not possibly be found.
