    Description

1880's Richard K. Fox Cabinet Photos & Catalogue (3). Richard K. Fox was one of the most active and influential boxing promoters of the Victorian era. Fox saw the legendary John L. Sullivan as his "white whale," actively seeking out a challenger who might dethrone him, most notably Jake Kilrain who he backed in the famous 1889 meeting. He is also noted as being an owner of the Police Gazette. Offered is a rare trio of artifacts credited to the early boxing pioneer of the sport. Includes: Joe Coburn cabinet card - Just minor surface imperfections, notable wear at one corner and a clean reverse, overall excellent; Tom Sayers cabinet photo - Very clean and virtually problem free image and mount. Overall excellent-mint; and 1889 Police Gazette Catalogue of Illustrated Sensational and Sporting Books - 32-page 3-1/4x5-1/4" catalogue that lists available Cabinet photographs, Colored Pictures, Sporting & Athletic Goods. Page list checklists of books, color photos and cabinet photos of Boxers, baseball players, actors, actresses and misc. subjects. Cover has partial spine split, rust at staples, otherwise very-good-plus.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
