1950's R437 Comics Novelty & Candy Co. James J. Corbett SGC 40 VG 3. Graded 40 VG 3 by SGC, the only graded example to date. One crease in an otherwise EX/MT level card, strong visual appeal.

    1950's R437 Joe Palooka Boxers
In the early 1920's, Ham Fisher developed a comic strip character named "Joe Palooka" who was a good-hearted boxer who didn't appreciate his livelihood. Palooka's first public appearance was in 1930. His slowly gaining popularity peaked in the late 40's when Joe Palooka became one of the top five most popular strips of the day. With popularity comes product endorsements. The character was used by Comics Novelty & Candy Co. to promote a line of candy and kids toys. In the early or mid-1950's, Comics Novelty produced some type of perforated promotional packaging which displayed one or more of at least a dozen different boxers with maybe others yet to be discovered. Now designated "R437," modern hobbyists have found this series to be among the most elusive 20th Century boxing releases. The American Card Catalog (ACC) only lists 6 subjects. Since the last addition of the ACC, five subjects have been discovered but the most knowledgeable hobby veterans have always considered the set complete at 12 subjects. We are offering that elusive 12th subject, Jack McAuliffe. This is the first time a complete set of all 12 known subjects is being offered at public auction.
