1890's Charley Mitchell Cabinet Photograph. A fearless bare-knuckle fighter who took on all comers regardless of size, Mitchell gave John L. Sullivan one of his bloodiest encounters, in a driving rain on the grounds of a French chateau. The bout was ultimately called a draw when neither fighter could lift his arms to punch. The "New York Illustrated News" cabinet derives from the studio of W. & D. Downey of London. The offered cabinet presents well with staining, paper tape and adhesive residue (also upper/right corner on front) from previous display.
