1889 N386 Spaulding & Merrick "Echo Tobacco" #8 Jake Kilrain SGC 20 Fair 1.5. Graded 20 FR 1.5 by SGC, one of only two Kilrain cards recorded to date. From a series of 24 subjects including actors, actresses and prizefighters. Number 8 in the series, Jake Kilrain was a very tough and durable fighter who even after 76 rounds of punishment by the great John Sullivan still wanted to continue even though his coach ended the fight by throwing in the sponge, the early version of throwing in the towel. Gently toned by age, the offered rarity fails to deserve the conservative technical assessment. Although it has light surface stains and wear with some spots of surface loss the overall state of the card is better than fair in our opinion. Jake's portrait has nice detail and good contrast. Corners are about EX with one slightly flipped up at the tip. The front reads "Smoke Echo Tobacco" while the blank backed reverse displays a partial purple "D" in a diamond shape company stamp. A pleasing copy where the advice "buy the card, not the holder" applies.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
