Description
Early 1990's Kobe Bryant Childhood Basketball Hoop. He was thirteen years old when his father Joe "Jellybean" Bryant abandoned his second professional basketball career in the Italian league and flew the Bryant clan back to the States for good, settling into a charming two-story home in the suburbs of Philadelphia. As the young phenom became the first freshman in decades to start for the esteemed Lower Merion High School varsity team, he'd spend his evenings in the driveway of that home, launching thousands of shots at this hoop as it stood silent sentry between the double doors of the family garage.Four years later, Kobe Bryant would become just the fourth player in NBA history to make the leap from high school to the highest court in the land, the first-round selection of the Charlotte Hornets, who would immediately trade the teenaged phenom to the Los Angeles Lakers team he'd ultimately lead to five NBA Championships. As Bryant's Hall of Fame credentials swelled with each passing season, the hoop remained where Jellybean had planted it, through the changing of dozens of seasons, until the family sold the house in 2008, and beyond.
When the new owners of the house decided to part with it in 2020, not long after Bryant's tragic passing, they realized that the hoop--quite possibly the one that swallowed more shots from Kobe than any other on the planet--was too special to be passed on as part of the home sale. Heritage is pleased to have been selected as the venue to bring this essential tool of Kobe Bryant's rise to athletic immortality to auction. The hoop is already world famous, turning up in media from Bleacher Report to TMZ.
The black metal pole (measuring 86"x 4"), hoop and backboard/hoop (measuring 54" x 43" x 38") are included, each showing the passage of nearly three decades but losing none of its immense historical relevance. Beyond its perfect fidelity to photography of the hoop in place at the former Bryant home, the relic is accompanied by a box of a couple dozen Italian basketball magazines also left behind by the Bryant family when they moved away in 2008. We should note that the hardware used to attach the backboard to its support pole is not present, but those components should be quite easy to track down should the winning bidder wish to reconstruct. If the winning bidder doesn't want the pole at all, shipping costs will be reduced accordingly.
Heritage famously sold the number "8" slab of Staples Center hardwood used in Kobe's sixty-point NBA farewell in October 2020 for $631,200, and this childhood hoop is the perfect opening bookend to the story that record-breaking relic concluded. Letter of provenance from consignor. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
