1997 Metal Universe Michael Jordan (Precious Metal Gems - Green) #23 PSA Authentic - #'d 9/100. For many of us, it was simply a reminder of a long-established truth. For younger generations, it was the revelation thereof. When the global pandemic slammed the door on professional sports for the first time in American history, a massive television audience was assured for the ten-part documentary that walked millions through the peerless hardcourt history of Michael Jordan in a Netflix special entitled "The Last Dance." Never before had Jordan's status as the GOAT been so universally understood and acknowledged.

Instantly, the ripple effects of the series were felt in the collectibles marketplace, where pricing for Jordan's iconic 1986-87 Fleer soared like a dunk from the foul line. A PSA Gem Mint 10 specimen had sold in a Heritage auction for $36,000 in December 2019. By early May, an identical example had climbed to $96,000. Less than four months later, an SGC Pristine Gold Label 10 had drawn a winning bid of $420,000. Just like MJ's six NBA Championship rings, these are numbers impossible to ignore.

Nobody can be sure where the hammer will fall upon the extraordinary rarity presented here, a card many dozens of times as scarce as the celebrated Fleer rookie. The 1997-98 Metal Universe issue represents the very first of the Precious Metal Gems cards, issued in conjunction with the set's base cards. Only one hundred were produced for each player in the set. Ninety of the one hundred cards were crafted from Red Foil, with the balance of ten instead tinted Green. No great mathematical skills are required to understand the supreme rarity of this Green Foil version. Let's remember that over 300 Gem Mint 10 examples of Jordan's Fleer rookie appear in the PSA population, a figure that should provide an important degree of context.

Of the ten Green Foil Jordans produced for this issue, just six have been presented to PSA for encapsulation, and this is one of two assigned an "Authentic" designation. The only other confirmed sale of such a card we have been able to locate-bearing an "Altered" qualifier that the offered specimen lacks-commanded over $350,000 earlier this year. This is unquestionably a superior example, and one of the most important trading cards produced in the past quarter century that Heritage has had the privilege to present to the collecting community.
