Description

Far rarer than the Fleer Jordan rookie!

1996 Topps Chrome Kobe Bryant (Refractor) Rookie #138 PSA Gem Mint 10. It's the most spectacular basketball issue of the 1990's, and this is the most important rookie card contained within. Topps introduced its first "Chrome" format for the 1996-97 NBA season, a stylish enhancement of the standard breed. The Chrome Refractor adds another measure of rarity and aesthetics to the mix, establishing this as the most desirable and resplendent of Kobe rookies. We remind our bidding audience that Refractors appeared within approximately one out of every dozen Topps Chrome packs, and, with 220 subjects in the Refractor roster, that would drive the odds of pulling this card well beyond 2,500 to one.

That intense rarity is amplified even further by the harsh taskmasters at PSA, who assign their highest grade to this absolutely pristine beauty. As any who have handled this issue are well aware, cards with this high-tech/high-cost finish are particularly delicate, so perfection is particularly difficult to achieve. This is one of just sixty-three Gem Mint 10 specimens at the time of this writing.

Of course, this trading card took on a tragic new significance two years ago when Bryant perished along with his daughter and seven others when his helicopter smashed into a Calabasas mountainside in heavy fog. While Bryant's elite athletic significance was long established by the time of his passing, the poignancy of that sudden loss inspired weeks of tributes that have elevated his stature even further among the global sports community.

We expect an international bidding war for this spectacular specimen, a glorious example of Kobe Bryant's most coveted rookie card. As the official grading would indicate, there is nothing but superlatives to offer in a condition report. Unquestionably one of the most important "modern" trading cards that Heritage has had the privilege to present to the collecting community.
