MJ scores forty as George Gervin's #44 is retired in San Antonio!

1987 Michael Jordan Game Worn & Dual-Signed Air Jordan II Sneakers. The night belonged to the Ice Man, but the young visitor from Chicago was red-hot on December 5, 1987, literally doubling the scoring tally of his next closest rival as he put up forty points in the most valiant losing effort in San Antonio since the Alamo. It was a reunion of sorts for the two future Hall of Famers, as Gervin joined the Bulls for his final NBA season, Jordan's injury-plagued second in Chicago. We suspect that the young Jordan turned it up a notch knowing that Gervin was in the house, and he'd ultimately earn his first of five NBA Most Valuable Player Awards at the close of the season. He was also voted Defensive Player of the Year and Slam Dunk Champion.

This second version of the legendary Air Jordan sneaker brand exhibits fine wear from Jordan's dazzling performance on Gervin's jersey retirement night, and when the final buzzer sounded, our consignor made his way down to the court with his special Gervin night program in an ultimately successful hunt for an autograph from the honoree, and that program (and matching ticket stub) is included in the lot.

But the star-struck fan's night got even better when he met up with a friend of his whose cousin was a long-time Spurs ball boy. Jordan had just signed and gifted his game shoes to the youngster, but the consignor's friend convinced his cousin to part with them, and they make their hobby debut here with the consignor's letter of provenance.

Like most Air Jordans of this era, the midsoles have degraded over the passage of decades, but collectors have long understood that this is a virtual inevitability and must be forgiven in light of that fact. Jordan's blue ink signature, preceded by a "To Tim" personalization, appear at each ankle in 7/10 (left) and 5/10 (right) ink. No markings or tagging appear inside, as typical for Jordan's personal Jordan II's. Letter of provenance from consignor. Game ticket & program. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.

Guide Value or Estimate: $30,000 - up.
