    Description

NBA Champion, NBA Finals MVP, NBA MVP, AP Athlete of the Year!

1986 Larry Bird NBA Finals Game Worn Boston Celtics Jersey with Letter from Future Wife.
They had to add a new wing onto Bird's trophy room by the time the 1985-86 NBA season had drawn to a close, a campaign that ranks with the finest ever supplied to an American sports audience. While the ascendance of a youngster from Chicago by the name of Jordan would soon add a layer of complexity to the argument, Bird's three straight NBA MVP Awards (1984-86), two NBA Finals MVP's (1984 & 1986) and three NBA Championships (1981, 1984, 1986) had virtually every Reagan-era basketball fan convinced that the Celtics power forward was the greatest talent ever to lay sneaker to an NBA hardcourt.

The offered jersey finds the iconic Hall of Famer adding the final brushstrokes to his greatest masterpiece as the Celtics downed the Houston Rockets in the NBA Finals, identified as such in an included handwritten letter by Bird's future wife Dinah to Terre Haute, Indiana businessman and auto racing team owner Don Smith.

    A transcript:

"Oct 5, 1986. Don, Enclosed is the uniform Larry promised for you which was worn during the Boston/Houston Championship game last June, Sincerely Dinah & Larry."

Arguably no jersey in NBA history is more fearsome than the white 1986 Celtics, as the team lost just a single game at Boston Garden between the home opener and the Finals Game Six clincher. This most famous version of them all trumpets "Celtics 33" and "Bird 33" on front and back respectively in classic kelly green tackle twill. Lower left front tail bears dual "Sand-Knit" tagging denoting Celtics exclusivity and size "46." Nearly imperceptible pinpricks at the corners of the garment are the result of an earlier mounted display, and are noted only in the interest of full disclosure.

After sixteen NBA Championships in three decades--including three in the Bird era--it would be more than three decades until the seventeenth would come to Beantown, further elevating this remarkable garment to the peak of collector desirability. We expect enormous bidding competition for this elite relic, leaving us to wonder just how high this Bird will fly. LOA from MEARS, A10. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Letter of provenance from Dinah Bird.
