    Description

1986 Fleer Basketball Wax Pack PSA NM-MT 8 - Michael Jordan Card Top! Mathematics was never our strongest subject in school, but calculating the statistical probability of the offered rarity is not a particularly complicated endeavor. This most significant trading card issue of the past four decades was comprised of 132 trading cards and eleven stickers. Operating under the assumption of true randomness, we can deduce that a Jordan card occupied the front position of one pack in every 132, and his sticker the back position of one pack in every eleven. Therefore, one in every 1,452 packs would have been issued with this most coveted combination.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. With submissions to PSA just shy of the 1,700 level at the time of this writing, only thirteen have been confirmed with Jordan leading the pack. When considering that over 300 Fleer Jordan rookies have been slabbed in a PSA Gem Mint 10 capsule, the elite rarity and importance of this offering comes into focus.

The lamentation that the 1986 Fleer Basketball set may well have been the last great trading card issue within the sports collectibles hobby must also play a role in framing the conversation. The "modern" hobby is alive and well, but clearly the dynamics have shifted from set-building to the hunt for rare inserts as the market has rendered nearly every "standard issue" card painfully common through overproduction. Much like the man whose rookie serves as its key component, after the 1986 Fleer set, there has never been anything quite like it again.
