Description

The Wizard's cloak!

1981-84 John Wooden Worn & Signed UCLA Bruins Staff Jacket, MEARS Authentic.

UPDATE: The autograph on this jacket is accompanied by a COA from PSA/DNA. This jacket was gifted to our consignor by John Wooden's grandson in the late 1980's and coach Wooden later signed the jacket for her personally. The jacket will be accompanied by a letter of provenance from the consignor.

It's been nearly a decade since this man set the record for the highest price ever paid for a coaching garment, John Wooden's UCLA staff jacket worn for years as he ruled the most powerful force in collegiate basketball history commanding a staggering $183,500. Here at Heritage, a jersey worn by Wooden as a star player for the early 1930's Purdue Boilermakers set a record for a college basketball gamer at an even more eye-popping $264,000. Suffice it to say, The Wizard of Westwood remains one of the hardcourt's most beloved figures.

Here we present a garment bearing a strong physical resemblance to that first record-setting Wooden result, but worn during Wooden's retirement as he remained active in the UCLA community. The design is the classic letterman style but crafted from knitted wool like a sweater, perfect for the cool spring and summer evenings of southern California. A chenille "UCLA Staff" patch is affixed over the heart, while "John Wooden" is embroidered at interior collar beneath a "Medalist Sand-Knit [size] 42" maker's label. Wear is appropriately light, and the garment bears a fine autograph from its original owner. LOA from MEARS, Authentic. LOA from Heritage Auctions. COA from PSA/DNA. Letter of provenance from consignor.
