1980 Topps Larry Bird/Erving/Magic Johnson PSA Gem Mint 10! The story of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson is told as a battle between two driven titans who excelled like few others in the pursuit of excellence. In reality, they are far more alike, more kindred spirits than gladiators. Both men came from modest means in the upper Mid-west. Both grew up in homes where financial resources were limited. Magic Johnson endured the burden of racial prejudice. Instead of giving up on what was transpiring, his personality made him an inspiration. It was through basketball that both men taught the world it doesn't matter where you are from. Hard work does pay. Both transformed floundering basketball programs to the heights of success. At Michigan State, a 10-17 team turned into a 25-5 powerhouse and a Big Ten championship that ended a 20-year drought. This was just his freshmen year. At Indiana State, Larry Bird played for three years leading his team to an 81-13 record. Both went on from NCAA to NBA Championships and in turn made the 1980's the most successful decades in NBA history. From 1979 through 1987, the Celtics or the Lakers were World Champions except for 1982. They were integral parts of the 1992 gold medal-winning Dream Team.
Graded PSA Gem MT 10. From the current total population of almost 6,500 submissions, this is one of twenty-two rated "Gem MT" by PSA. That puts this card among the top one-third of one-percent on the quality chart! It should come as no surprise that when basketballs' two supermen make their NBA debut together and are featured on the same card that it becomes one of the most coveted gems of the basketball collecting universe. Here we offer that Larry Bird/Julius Erving/Magic Johnson trio from the 1980 Topps basketball issue - and one of the finest recorded examples no less. Thanks to perforation process and traditionally less than perfect centering, this card is famous, or infamous for the lack of prefect copies in collector hands.
