1961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain #8 SGC NM+ 7.5. Presented is the only recognized rookie card of Wilt Chamberlain, an NBA all-time icon. Wilt was basically incapable of living life small. For the 7'1", 275 lb. Big Dipper, it was live life large or go home. And Wilt seldom went home, especially in the NBA season when this card came out, 1961-62. If Wilt's tendencies ran to excess, then 1961-62 was when Wilt sped beyond excess and put mere excess in his rearview mirror. Wilt debuted with his hometown Philadelphia Warriors, went with the Warriors to San Francisco, came back to Philadelphia to play for the 76ers, and finished with the Los Angeles Lakers. He won championships with the 76ers and Lakers, won four MVP Awards, seven scoring crowns, 11 rebounding awards, and once - just because he could - he decided to win the NBA assist title, and he did. The 1961-62 season was Wilt's third. He had averaged 37 and then 38 points in his first two years. NBA fans speculated about whether he could become the first NBA player to average 40 points. He didn't. Wilt went out and averaged a mind-boggling all-time record 50.4 points a game that season.Graded SGC NM+ 7.5. But before the regular season was up, Wilt had time for one more splurge. On March 2, 1962, the Warriors hosted the New York Knicks at the Hershey Sports Arena. Wilt had 69 points after three quarters, and the Warriors just kept feeding him the ball, and he scored in the last minute to give him an even 100 points - still the NBA record. This Fleer Chamberlain card is the only recognized rookie card of the Hall of Famer who marched to the beat of his own drummer, helped take the NBA to the big time, and always marched large.
