    Description

1957 Topps Bill Russell Rookie #77 PSA NM 7. Presented is the rookie card of Hall of Fame center Bill Russell, a winner who didn't just give lip service to playing for the team. No, Bill Russell really did it. From when he led the University of San Francisco to consecutive NCAA championships in 1955 and '56, to being captain of the U.S. Olympic team that won the Gold Medal in the 1956 Olympics, to being the main player and later the player/coach of the Boston Celtics, a team that won the NBA championship eleven out of his thirteen playing seasons, two with "Russ" coaching.

Russell was not a good shooter, scoring mostly on put-backs or lay-ups, and only averaged 15.1 PPG for his career; he had teammates who could shoot. Russell was a terrific rebounder, leading the NBA 4-times in TRB, and Russell would upon grab a defensive rebound, immediately look up-court and throw a long outlet pass that led to the pass that got the assist. Russell didn't get the credit, but he had made the key pass. On defense, he would block shots intelligently, keeping the ball in Celtic possession. As he said, "Don't block the ball into the stands; keep it in your hands." Russell was a 12-time All-Star and a 3-time MVP.

The 1957 Topps set was the first nationally distributed hoops set since 1948, and as such it contained many rookie cards. To name a few, rookie cards belong to Bob Cousy, Sweetwater Clifton, Bob Petit and Tom Heinsohn. There are 80 cards in the set, and 47 of them were double-printed, with Russell's card being the only big star in the set without a double-printing, thus making his card scarcer than that of the other stars. Graded PSA NM 7.
