    Description

1957 Topps Bill Russell #77 PSA NM 7. "Just win, baby!" was the oft-repeated mantra of former Oakland Raiders owner and GM Al Davis. Bill Russell, one who grew up in Oakland, didn't spout that saying very much. He just went out and did it. Offered here is the rookie card of the Hall of Famer Russell, the NBA's first Afro-American superstar. The University of San Francisco, with Bill at center, won consecutive NCAA championships in 1955 and '56. Russell also captained the USA Olympic basketball team that won the 1956 Gold Medal. Wily Boston Celtics impresario Red Auerbach coveted Russell and traded top players, Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagen, to the St. Louis Hawks to be able to draft the 6'9" player. Russell was a sensation - a key part of the Celtics winning an amazing 11 championships in his 13 playing seasons. The last three of those seasons Russell also coached the Celtics, winning two NBA titles, thus becoming the first black professional coach of a major sport in North America, and the first one to win a title. He coached other NBA teams for five seasons. Russell averaged only 15.1 career PPG, but he was a 12-time All Star, a 4-time TRB champ, and a 5-time MVP. Russell was a team player whose defense and rebounding won championships.

The '57 issue was the first national distributed basketball set since the 1948 Bowman. The "Measuring Stick" was a distinctive feature that ran along the card's right border, showing the player's height. Russell is the set's centerpiece. The set features rookie cards of many Hall of Famers, such as Cousy, Petit, Stokes, etc. Fittingly, Russell is shown on defense. Graded PSA NM 7.
