1915 Edwin Stenger University of Cincinnati Bearcats Game Worn Jersey. Ancient, wine colored wool jersey with thick, wrap-around black-dyed inlay stripe displays "Cin'ti" sewn across the chest in thick pink felt. The font of the C" incorporates a serif, which was probably influenced by the Cincinnati Reds logo of the time, and a dropped underscore, which combines with the apostrophe to really make the identifier pop out. Meanwhile, a bulb-bottom "7" is sewn high on the verso, above the stripe, in thick black felt. Finally, a period "A.G. Spalding & Bros." label is sewn onto the interior hemline of the tail. Exhibits fine multi-season wear, enhanced by the two vintage team repairs affected to the front of the garment.

This specimen understandably exhibits some distractions, including moth holes and some disengaging of the felt identifiers. But these are relatively minor when considering the garment's 106-year vintage. What's more, it is remarkable that this garment even exists at all, let alone in an intact state.

As the earliest game worn basketball jersey ever offered by Heritage Auctions, and one of the earliest ever offered at public sale, this exemplar is surely a museum quality piece. It would be a focal point in any collection of game worn basketball jerseys or vintage early basketball equipment.

This lot also includes 1910's images of Stenger playing baseball for "Harrison" (8x10" cabinet), football for "Co. E" (3.25x5.5") and a blueprint of the "Residence for E.P. Stenger...Cincinnati, Ohio." LOA from Heritage Auctions.
