Marques Haynes Final Game Used Shoes and Mikan Injury Support from the Marques Haynes Collection. After famed Chicago sportswriter Arch Ward proclaimed the Globetrotters as the best basketball team on the planet, Lakers' general manager Max Winter issued a challenge to his friend Abe Saperstein. On February 19, 1948 the Lakers, led by George Mikan and the Globetrotters faced off to settle the matter. The Lakers, a prohibitive favorite, took a halftime lead of 32-23. Late in the third quarter, while wrestling with Mikan for a rebound Marques Haynes fell hard to the floor and Mikan fell on top of him. Haynes, in obvious pain, refused to come out of the game. The Globetrotters went on to win 61-59 on a last-second shot and while most of his teammates went out to celebrate, Haynes was in too much pain to enjoy the victory. X-rays taken the next morning revealed that he had fractured his vertebra. The offered back braces were used upon his return the next year after being sent home to Oklahoma to recuperate the rest of the 1948 season. The victory over the Lakers provided the Globetrotters with a new level of legitimacy and paved their way to a larger presence on both a national and world stage.

In addition, this lot contains two pairs of shoes. First, a pair of signed Chuck Taylor's with the canvas and rubber surfaces displaying literally miles of wear. Next, a similar pair of shoes identified by Marques Haynes as the very last shoes he wore in competition. After thousands upon thousands of games spanning a playing career of close to fifty years, with innumerable pairs of Chuck Taylor's seeing action, these shoes were privately and quietly marked to indicate "the end." LOA from Lou Lampson.
