Description
Circa 1972 Pete Maravich Game Worn Jersey. Leave it to upper management to spoil all the fun. At the same time that Charlie O. Finley was sewing "Catfish" and "Campy" to the back of Hunter and Campaneris' Oakland A's jerseys in Major League Baseball, the Atlanta Hawks were applying "Pistol" to the back of young Pete Maravich's gamers, much to the delight of NBA fans. But then the mid-1970's ushered in a new age of nickname-bashing in professional sports, and such charming monikers were sacrificed to boring old surnames. Provided is an intensely scarce veteran of those carefree days when Maravich was identified by his famous nickname on his jersey verso, a characteristic that makes this red knit Atlanta Hawks jerseys one of the most sought after basketball gamers in the collecting hobby. While we must acknowledge that the "Pistol" riding the shoulders of this historic garment has been faithfully restored after team removal for practice purposes soon after the regular season's close, this alteration to original state is so expertly rendered that only top experts could discern the work from the original. The number "44" beneath, and the "Atlanta 44" upon the chest remain 100% original and unaltered. Game wear is characterized as "Moderate" by MEARS, though we consider the rating rather conservative considering the consistency of the use from the jersey body to the tagging at interior collar. The handwritten "Maravich" flap tag in the collar is slightly blurred by sweaty wear, and the washing instructions tag to its right is likewise heavily affected by use. All tackle twill identifiers, with the exception of the post-use "Pistol," show considerable sweat puckering.
Short of the single (and necessary) restoration, the jersey remains an ideal Maravich representation, dating to the infancy of his professional career before injury and hard-living had begun to take their toll. The most desirable and recognizable style, the strong wear and the historical placement conspire to elevate the lot to the pinnacle of collector desirability, and establishes it for multitudes of fans as the most appealing basketball jersey on the face of the earth, bar none. Graded A7. LOA from MEARS. LOA from Lou Lampson.
