    Farewell, Doctor...

1986-87 Julius "Dr. J" Erving Game Worn Philadelphia 76ers Jersey, MEARS A8. In much the same way that Babe Ruth revolutionized the sport of baseball with his power, Dr. J can be credited with forever changing the way basketball is played, taking the action above the rim and bringing the slam dunk into the American lexicon. His flashy play and towering afro drew legions of fans and helped to establish the ABA as a legitimate threat to the entrenched National Basketball Association. Arguably no single player is more responsible for the resulting merger.

Presented is a jersey worn by the veteran superstar as he put the finishing touches on his Hall of Fame career, one of the very last number "6" jerseys ever worn in Sixers play. Though the Doctor had lost a step or two after fifteen seasons in the professional game, he still ranked second in the team standings for points per game at 16.8, trailing only fellow future Hall of Famer Charles Barkley, a man thirteen years his junior. It is this uniform style Erving was wearing as the Sixers were eliminated at Milwaukee in the first round of the playoffs. He would receive a standing ovation from the Bucks faithful as he walked off the court for the last time.

The red mesh roadster features a white and blue tackle twill "Sixers" on the chest and white "Erving" on reverse, each affixed above the fabled number "6." Lower left front tail holds proper dual "Sand-Knit" labeling reporting 76ers exclusivity and size "40." A "2" LB" tailoring swatch is affixed to the left.

The jersey earns perfect marks for its fidelity to known exemplars, with points deducted only for the degree of game wear, characterized as "moderate" by the experts at MEARS. An included pair of matching shorts will enhance display, but are not attributed to Erving. LOA from MEARS, A8. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
