1979-86 Julius Erving Game Worn Philadelphia 76ers Jersey, MEARS A10. In much the same way that Babe Ruth revolutionized the sport of baseball with his power, Dr. J can be credited with forever changing the way basketball is played, taking the action above the rim and bringing the slam dunk into the American lexicon. His flashy play and towering afro drew legions of fans and helped to establish the ABA as a legitimate threat to the entrenched National Basketball Association. Arguably no single player is more responsible for the resulting merger.

Presented is a jersey worn by the veteran superstar as he represented the franchise that enjoyed the bulk of his professional services, the very format he sported as he claimed the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 1981 and the NBA Championship in 1983. The red mesh roadster features a white and blue tackle twill "Sixers" on the chest and white "Erving" on reverse, each affixed above the fabled (and retired) number "6." Each digit exhibits significant puckering from the effects of salty perspiration. The experts at MEARS fittingly characterize game use as "Heavy" in their glowing letter of examination. Tagging at lower left front tail is likewise soft from sweat and washing, with the local Philadelphia "Pearson Sporting Goods" label just above a "Wilson [size] 40" tag trailing a "Long" flap designator.

Rarely does a garment from a Top Fifty player emerge on the hobby's auction block with such spectacular game wear, elevating this offering to the upper reaches of the subgenre's hierarchy. It's a piece equally worthy of a place of honor in the finest of private collections and the hallowed halls of Springfield. LOA from MEARS, A10. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
