Description
1979-80 Pete Maravich Game Issued Jersey. Unceremoniously waived by the Utah Jazz on January 18, 1980, Pistol Pete inspired a feverish off-court battle between the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers, each playoff contender looking for a bit more depth in its backcourt for the final months of the season. Three days after his dismissal from the Jazz, the Pistol met with Sixers general manager Pat Williams, ironically the same man who had traded him from Atlanta six years earlier. The team had been so confident that Maravich would sign on the dotted line that a jersey with his name was made up for him in anticipation. Even The New York Times seemed convinced, reporting Maravich was "Likely to sign with 76ers." But by the time this issue hit the newsstands, Pistol Pete was a Celtic.Presented is the one and only 76ers jersey ever made for this Hall of Fame point guard, remaining in unused condition due to one of the biggest blunders in the history of NBA general management. As the story goes, each team romancing the future Hall of Famer required a physical from Maravich, legitimately concerned about the state of his bum knee and his rather well documented alcoholism. The Sixers' physical was far more invasive than that of the Celtics, and, for that reason, the tempermental Maravich immediately wrote off Philadelphia as an option. Team owner Fritz Dixon was irate, demanding an answer from his general manager. "How did you screw it up?" he screamed.
The red mesh reminder of what might have been announces "Sixers 7" in white and blue tackle twill on the chest, and "Maravich 7" on verso. "Wilson [size] 42" label resides at lower exterior left tail, complete with a flap tag denoting four inches of extra length. The jersey remains tragically unworn, surviving as a thoroughly unique footnote in the all-too-short life of "Pistol Pete" Maravich. LOA from Lou Lampson. LOA from MEARS.
