Description
1977-78 Rick Barry Game Worn Golden State Warriors Jersey, MEARS A7. Loved, hated, talented, underrated, controversial, misunderstood. All of these words have been used to describe Rick Barry. The only player to lead the NCAA, ABA and NBA in scoring, he is also the only player to admit to punching a nun. His unselfish play on the court earned him the undisputed mantle as the game's best passing center, but his unfiltered persona led Mike Dunleavy to remark: "If you sent Rick Barry to the United Nations, he would probably end up starting World War III."
When the Miami Greyhound left Golden State for the riches of the ABA in 1967, Warriors owner Frank Mieuli continued to keep a photograph of his prodigal son in his office, vowing that he would return. When Barry finally did, in 1972, he was still a great scorer and the game's premier passer and foul shooter, but now more focused on passing and playmaking. That ball movement ethos spread throughout the team and by 1975 the Warriors were NBA Champions and Barry was the Finals MVP.
The jersey on offer here dates from the 1977-78 season, when Barry was once again an All-Star, averaging 23.1 points and converting from the charity stripe at a league leading .924 clip. Gold/blue/white mesh home jersey sports light game wear, screened-on identifiers, and is signed twice on the front in sharpie, with Medalist Sand-Knit exclusive and size (42) tags in the tail. It should be noted that Sand-Knit basketball jerseys were cut wider and shorter than what was the conventional style for the era and this jersey reflects that attribute.
From the mid-1960's to the late-1970's there wasn't anyone alive on Planet Earth with more ability or a greater basketball IQ than The Miami Greyhound. If you are assembling a game worn jersey collection of the best basketball players ever, a representation of Rick Barry is a requirement. LOA from MEARS, A7. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph). Full LOA from SGC Authentic (autograph).
