1977-78 Bill Walton Game Worn & Signed Portland Trailblazers
Jersey, MEARS A10 -- MVP Season! Bill Walton is counted among
the most dominant and intelligent big men in basketball history, a
transformative figure of the 1970's game. As a two-time NCAA
champion with UCLA under the legendary John Wooden, Walton
delivered a collegiate career marked by exceptional rebounding,
scoring, and defense. He carried that success into the NBA, where
he won two NBA championships-first with the Portland Trail Blazers
in 1977, where he was named Finals MVP, and later as a key
contributor to the Boston Celtics' 1986 title team. Walton's
vision, passing ability, and basketball IQ made him unique for a
center, though his career was hampered by frequent injuries. He is
a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and is
celebrated as both a player and an iconic broadcaster.Invigorated by that first NBA championship, Walton would storm to his sole NBA MVP Award the subsequent season, and this home white mesh jersey exhibits fantastic game wear from that magical final year in Portland. The experts at MEARS arrive at their perfect 10 assessment through a combination of the jersey's heavy use, its 100% original and unaltered condition, and its ironclad provenance that is substantiated by a signed letter of provenance from longtime Phoenix Suns head athletic trainer Joe Proski.
Red on black tackle twill announces "blazers 32" across the chest, the distinctive diagonal stripe below matching the same color scheme of the identifiers and the trim at collar and arm holes. "Walton 32" is applied to verso, with nice puckering from sweaty competition. Lower right front tail is tagged, "Rawlings [size] 44" with "5 Inch Extra Length" flap tag anchored at right edge.
A 2013 letter from hobby legend Rich Altman informs us that Walton signed the subject jersey in April of that year, his 10/10 black sharpie inscription on rear numeral reading, "Bill Walton, My Gamer, '77 NBA Finals MVP." LOA from MEARS, A10. Letter of provenance from Phoenix Suns head trainer. Letter of provenance from Rich Altman. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
