    Description

1975-76 Lee Davis Game Worn ABA San Diego Sails Jersey with Player Letter - Team Played Eleven Games Before Folding.
The American Basketball Association added quite a bit of spice to the sport. The basketball was red, white and blue and dripped with patriotism. A wide open game allowed plenty of dunks and other acts of bravado. And nobody could forget those Afros and zany combinations of colors worn by the teams. Some of the jerseys and shooting jackets were among the most unique of any time period.

Given the shaky state of the league, a few teams were here and gone in a matter of weeks. In 1972, Leonard Bloom founded the ABA's first, and only, expansion team. The Conquistadors had a gate attraction in Wilt Chamberlain. Although his career was winding down, Wilt provided the team with a signature star who could at least bring in the folks. He departed in 1974 and the team was eventually sold as a new stadium couldn't be secured. The Q's became known as the San Diego Sails for the 1975-76 season. Gold and maroon were replaced by royal blue, green and white. The team's existence was short-lived as it folded after only eleven games. San Diego's basketball team wouldn't be absorbed into the NBA which left the Sails on the outside looking in. A number of their players were taken by NBA teams but the team fell by the wayside.

The ABA has enjoyed a cult-like following given its larger-than-life status, and very few artifacts survived from the Sails' brief tenure. This "Spanjian size 46" jersey was worn by journeyman big man Lee Davis in 1975-76. The blue mesh gamer has "Sails 8" on front in brilliant three-color formation (some surface degradation on number) and "Davis 8" on the reverse. Good use is shown throughout. The tail features a Spanjian tag (local manufacturer) and "XL" flag tag. Authentication is concrete as a letter of authenticity from Davis will accompany. Rarity, check. Style, check. One of the rarest ABA jerseys, an emphatic check. Letter of provenance from Lee Davis. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Pre-Certifed by PSA/DNA for Letter of Provenance. Auction LOA from SGC Authentic for Letter of Provenance.
