Issued to the future NBA scoring king during his freshman season with John Wooden!

1969 Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) Worn UCLA Bruins Letterman's Jacket. With the addition of Alcindor to the varsity roster for his 1967 sophomore season, the reigning National Champion UCLA Bruins went from unstoppable to literally unbeatable, their towering center recording a UCLA single-game record of fifty-six points in his very first contest. He'd graduate in 1969 with a record of 88-2, having led the Bruins to three consecutive NCAA Championships, winning "Most Outstanding Player" honors for each tournament. As a senior, Alcindor would be named the first ever Naismith College Player of the Year.

Set this all against a backdrop of a period in American history that saw the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy, the Moon landing, the Manson murders, and Alcindor's emerging role as a spokesman for the Civil Rights movement, and you are left with a piece of nearly immeasurable historical intrigue. A half-century later we are yet again reminded of the outsized role that sports has played and continues to play in matters of social justice. The listed jacket celebrates an era of both glory and change, and a man central to each.

Though the chenille lettering on upper left chest reads, "UCLA 69," it's important to note that this represents Alcindor's graduating class, not the year of issue--he wore this jacket throughout his full collegiate career. Though there are no personal identifiers inside the garment, authenticity is assured by its enormity and, even more importantly, its derivation from Abdul-Jabbar's personal collection, complete with his hand-signed letter of provenance.

Condition is spectacular, with clear wear but none of the moth damage or other common faults to decades-old wool clothing. A profoundly important keepsake of the man who thrilled basketball fans in the City of Angels for nearly two decades. Letter of provenance from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
