    Description

The Big E authors one of the greatest debut seasons in NBA history!

1968-69 Elvin Hayes Game Worn San Diego Rockets Rookie Jersey. He played exactly fifty thousand minutes of NBA ball, but his first 3,695 accounted for one of the greatest rookie campaigns in the history of the sport. The first overall pick in the 1968 NBA draft proved that the selection was justified, as Hayes would notch a staggering average of 28.4 points per game to lead the league in scoring, a prodigious output that included a career-best fifty-four against the Detroit Pistons. Hayes' scoring average stands as fifth-best all time for an NBA rookie, and he remains the last rookie to have led the league in the statistic.

This historic garment was with Hayes at the San Diego Sports Arena that peerless first season, exhibiting strong wear that may include some secondary action after the regular season's conclusion. We come to that theory by the very clear stitching outline of "Hayes" on verso, replaced by the letter "E" that Hayes would wear in later years. All other identifiers, from the "Rockets" on the chest to the number "11" on front and reverse, are original and unchanged. We must note that the digits lack the horizontal base we're used to seeing on Hayes' jerseys from this period, but we do have photographic evidence that the style was worn by the Rockets, and we direct interested bidders to our online listing for an image.

The tail features proper dual "Sand-Knit" tagging, the top label reporting "Bill Smith Sporting Goods, El Cajon, Cal Distributors" and the bottom announcing "Size 44." A few small stains on jersey verso cause little distraction. The jersey was acquired by our consignor, a well-known collector, from Hayes decades ago, and makes its auction debut here. It's a rare and thrilling opportunity to own a rookie shirt from a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and NBA's Fifty Greatest Players list. LOA from Heritage Auctions.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
