Pistol Pete begins his climb to the NCAA scoring record!

1967-68 Pete Maravich Game Worn LSU Tigers Jersey -- Photo Matched! While the American Basketball Association (ABA) is properly credited for playing a leading role in the rise of a more dynamic style of play than that which had previously held sway in the sport, no discussion of this evolution would be complete without a nod to the man who wore the jersey on offer here. While Pete Maravich rose to prominence through extraordinary discipline and dedication under the tutelage of his equally obsessed father and coach Press, the flash and showmanship was the future Hall of Famer's true calling card.

"I remember when I was a senior and our assistant coach Jay McCreary told me that the new kid Maravich was a hell of player," recalled Brad Brian, LSU's radio analyst during the Maravich era. "And when I saw this terrible skinny-looking kid walk on the floor to play pickup ball with us for the first time, I started chuckling. After we played for about an hour and he threw passes I'd never seen before, I went straight to a phone to call my brother. I told him, 'Come out to LSU tomorrow and buy all the season tickets you can. I just played against the finest basketball player I've ever played in my life."

That was good advice. Denied by school policy a varsity position during his freshman season, Pete Maravich exploded onto the scene as a sophomore in 1967-68, wearing the subject jersey. He'd average an outrageous 43.8 points per game during that debut college campaign to lead the NCAA, picking up pace each subsequent season to graduate as the all-time leading scorer in college basketball history. Basketball historians have since gone through film footage of all of Maravich's college game and determined that his long-range shots would have augmented his average to 57 points per game had the three-point line existed.

The purple cotton durene blend shell announces "LSU 23" on the chest in white and yellow tackle twill that is supple to the touch from sweaty wear and laundering. The digits are repeated in larger format on verso. Lower left rear interior tail holds a "Rawlings [size] 42" label and washing instructions tag, separated by a cotton swatch that may or may not have once had legible text on its surface--it appears blank today. The jersey remains in 100% original and unaltered condition. Our consignor informs us that the jersey was originally acquired by an early hobby pioneer from Pete Maravich directly.

The experts at MeiGray have matched the jersey to an undated image, although the season is certain as LSU wore a different style during Maravich's junior and senior years. Photo match LOA from MeiGray. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
