    Local boy makes good!

1963-64 Jerry Lucas Game Worn Cincinnati Royals Rookie Jersey, MEARS A10. He had led his Middletown High School to back-to-back Ohio State Championships in 1956 and 1957, and his number "11" became just the second uniform number to be retired by Ohio State University, so fans of the Cincinnati Royals were thrilled to learn that Lucas was named the territorial selection in the 1962 NBA draft. A year later he would make his debut, inspiring record-breaking attendance at Cincinnati Gardens where he would form a fruitful partnership with another Hall of Fame-bound native son, the great Oscar Robertson. Together that legendary pair would combine to average 49.1 points, 27.3 rebounds and 13.6 assists per game. Lucas would claim NBA Rookie of the Year honors while Robertson would be named MVP. The Royals cruised all the way to the NBA Finals, but ultimately the mighty Celtics were able to capitalize on Lucas' injury to take the series in five games.

Presented is the home white jersey worn by Lucas during that auspicious rookie season, one of the finest post-war basketball relics we have had the good fortune to offer. Season-long wear is evident in the white knit body and blue and red tackle twill identifiers that announce "Royals 16" on the chest, those digits repeated in similar format on reverse. A memorial armband at left shoulder, applied in honor of a perished team executive, has faded to a subtle brown while it assures rookie vintage. Lower left front tail bears "Wilson [size] 46" tagging.

This is one of just two Lucas jerseys to have surfaced in the collecting hobby, a late-1960's model commanding over $30,000 several years ago. Certainly this is the more significant of the two, a rare and exciting opportunity to own a rookie gamer from a Naismith Hall of Famer and member of the even more exclusive "50 Greatest Players in NBA History" named in 1996 to honor the Golden Anniversary of the league. LOA from MEARS, A10. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
