Description

1960 Bill Russell NBA All-Star Game Worn Eastern Conference Jersey, MEARS A10. If there was ever proof that Hall of Fame coach Red Auerbach was ahead of his time, this was it. Historically, the center position had always been seen almost exclusively as an offensive weapon, but the legendary hardcourt general saw in the University of San Francisco All-American an elite rebounder who could dominate the backcourt. Russell, Auerbach believed, was the missing piece in the Celtics' Championship puzzle. In a 1956 draft-day trade with the St. Louis Hawks, Auerbach claimed his prize, and added fellow future Hall of Famers K.C. Jones and Tommy Heinsohn to the roster as well. And thus the greatest dynasty in NBA history was begun.

The eleven-time NBA Champion was in the midst of his third of those seasons of glory when he wore this patriotic gamer in representation of the Eastern Conference on January 22, 1960 at Philadelphia's Convention Hall. Along with Celtics teammates Bill Sharman and Bob Cousy, and anchored by the legendary hometown hero Wilt Chamberlain, the East took a 125-115 victory. Russell would supply six points and eight rebounds to the cause.

The simple white durene jersey Russell wore that day bears a royal blue number "6" on front and back amidst a spangle of red stars. Interior tail holds a "Wilson [size] 44" label. Wear is correct for the occasion, and a few tiny specks of toning are not enough to undermine a flawless MEARS assessment. Russell jerseys are ultra-rare--this is just the second to appear at auction in recent memory. LOA from MEARS, A10. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
