1940's Harlem Globetrotters Travel Jacket. The Harlem Globetrotters are not a nationwide phenomenon, rather their popularity is enjoyed global wide. No other roundball fixture is able to create pure joy like the kings of comedy. Globetrotters memorabilia is widely collected and anything from their early days is almost non-existent. Well, the story of Bill McConnell has brought the collecting world one of the finest jackets we have seen. As the story goes, in 1951 McConnell was working as an instructor for Ray Meyer's basketball clinic in Eagle River, Wisconsin. One of the campers desired a carton of cigarettes and given the fact McConnell was unusually tall for his age he was summoned to buy the cigarettes. His prize for doing such an act, a coveted Harlem Globetrotters travel jacket. You see, the mother of the camper who just had to have a smoke was Abe Saperstein's secretary. So McConnell gained this very jacket for purchasing the loot. A large 6.5"chenille filled logo is centered on the reverse as "Harlem Globetrotters" surrounds the perimeter in two-color formation. We must report the red sleeve shoulder leather material has extreme surface degradation with holes on the upper portions from exposure. Some of the red leather has chipped in spots as well. Red/white/blue ribbed material surrounds the collar (some splitting), sleeve ends and tail. An "Oxford" manufacturer's tag is applied on the inner pocket. A letter spelling out the story will attend.
