Description

1962 Philadelphia Warriors Wilt Chamberlain 100-Point Game Program. Despite the enormous scarcity of relics from this Hershey, Pennsylvania contest, every fan on earth knows the event. On March 2, 1962, the seven-foot one inch superstar center for the Philadelphia Warriors became the first (and, to this date, only) man in NBA history to require a third digit on his personal scoring sheet, dropping an even one hundred in a 169-147 victory over the visiting New York Knicks. Just over four thousand fans were on hand to witness this stunning display of offensive production, so the scarcity of surviving programs is little surprise.

We searched our auction archives and this is only the third program from that historic night which we have offered in twenty years. Chamberlain is prominently featured on the front of The Wigwam issue issued at the double header. The original owner who attended the game understood the importance of the event and took the time to score the program with Wilt's unworldly stat line: "36" field goals made, "28" free throws made and "2" personal fouls. Next to that he noted "new record 100 pts."

This sixty-year-old relic exhibits a front cover tear at the top (away from Wilt's photo) which has been reinforced with tape applied to the inside front cover. The back cover also reveal a small tear and some discoloration. However, this distractions are understandable and forgivable considering the age and scarcity of the program and the fact that it is otherwise a completely intact witness to perhaps the single most dominating day in sports history.

It is also interesting to note that the 100-point game never officially ended. Right after Dippy hit the century mark, fans rushed the floor and referees Pete D'Ambrosio and Willie Smith decided there was no point in continuing despite the fact that there were still forty-six seconds remaining on the clock.
