1939 James Naismith Original Photograph. James Naismith is best known as the inventor of basketball, creating the sport in 1891 while working as a physical education instructor in Springfield, Massachusetts. Tasked with developing a new indoor game to keep students active during the winter, Naismith devised a game that involved throwing a ball into a peach basket, laying the foundation for modern basketball. His 13 original rules have evolved, but the core principles remain in the game played worldwide today. Naismith's contribution to sports extended beyond basketball, as he also became a respected coach and educator, and his legacy is honored with the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, named in his honor.Offered is a 6x8" original photograph of the pioneer. Toning and markings exhibited as well as creasing and a taped over tear on the bottom left corner.
