Mid 1960's Lew Alcindor Hand Drawn Self Portrait - From Burt Britton Collection. Infatuated with the arts, young "Village Vanguard" bartender Burt Britton served drink after drink to a solitary last guest, the legendary Norman Mailer, trying to get him to leave, so he could go home to bed. "What do you want from me, kid?"

"Norman, here, on this piece of paper, do a self-portrait for me, drink your drink, and let's call it a night." And that, according to Britton, "began all this madness."

The offered "Self-portrait" of Lew Alcindor was obtained in the mid-1960's by Britton, who told the under-age basketball star that the price of admission was to draw him a self-portrait. Measuring at 4x9.5", the toned envelope features a stick pencil drawing from Alcindor, and it is one of numerous celebrity drawings in the Britton Collection that was featured in his book "Self-Portrait: Book People Picture Themselves".
