Description
Circa 1978 Elvin Hayes Game Worn & Signed Early Nike Player Exclusive Sneaker. The first wave of player exclusive sneakers began in the decade of the 1970's. In 1971, Adidas paid Kareem $25,000 per year to endorse the "K. Abdul-Jabbar," which combined leather uppers and suede striping, along with Kareem's likeness/signature as the primary logo, and his famed skyhook as the secondary logo. In 1973, Puma gave Walt Frazier $5,000 and free shoes to debut the "Puma Clyde," which featured wide soles and "Clyde" stamped on the suede uppers. And in 1976, Dr. J debuted the Converse "Pro Leather." Erving had actually switched from Adidas to Converse while still in the ABA, when the brand signed him for about $20,000 per year. Nike was the last of the "big four" to introduce player exclusives, with models for Paul Westphal, Gus Williams and Elvin Hayes in the late 70's.Hayes was just the type of player Nike wanted. He was a former college player of the year, perennial NBA All-Star and is Bullets had just won the NBA title. Perhaps best of all, he had a killer nickname--The Big E.
Elvin's single right sneaker offered here rocks a white/red colorway with white leather upper, red leather Swoooshes on the sides, Nike label on outer tongue and "E" in white on the red leather heel tab. Insole intact and no interior size indicator, which was common for player player samples of this era. The toe box is signed and inscribed "Best Wishes, Elvin Hayes" in 9/10 black sharpie. Presents beautifully and without distraction. An important artefact dating from the infancy of a multi-billion dollar industry. For the style match see Getty Images #478213572.
