The rarest Air Jordans of them all!
2006 Air Jordan "Defining Moments" Package Unreleased Sample
Pairs Lot of 2. You can find advertising for Converse
basketball shoes dating back as far as 1920, and by the 1950's the
iconic "Chuck Taylor" format of that pioneering brand had become
the ubiquitous standard from the high school hardcourt to the NBA.
The brand would struggle briefly in the 1970's before a dramatic
rescue by Larry Bird and Magic Johnson formed the most successful
shoe endorsement to date.Of course we all know that status would soon be assumed by a youngster named Michael Jordan and the annual updates of his eponymous Nike issue that created a global subculture of "sneakerheads." And it is for the most hardcore of that collecting demographic that we present the ultimate rarity of the Air Jordan phenomenon.
For the rest of us who might be confused by a Converse sneaker produced by Nike, we'll note that the latter purchased the former in 2003, a $300 million transaction that made this most unusual and desirable hybrid a possibility. But a possibility was ultimately all it would ever prove to be, never making it past the "Sample" stage and into retail outlets.
These pairs of shoes were originally destined to be part of the famous 2006 "Air Jordan Defining Moments" package, consisting of special versions of the VI and the XI to mark its namesake's opening salvo in each of his Bulls three-peats. Ultimately, Nike would decide to drop the Converse format from the package, this style (of course) a celebration of his first taste of national championship glory with the UNC Tar Heels.
Boldly marked "Sample" over the size "9" labeling at each interior tongue, these two ultra-rare pairs appear in gold-on-white and blue-on-black colorways, each rather intriguingly forgoing the iconic "Jumpman" logo at heel for a silhouette of Jordan's NCAA Championship-winning shot along with a number "23" in Tar Heels blue. White pair exhibits some leather degradation at interior ankle but all four shoes present in beautiful, unworn condition otherwise.
