    The glory before the tragedy...

1984 University of Maryland Terrapins ACC Championship Ring Presented to Len Bias. The two-time ACC Player of the Year was called "the closest thing to Michael Jordan to come out in a long time" by Boston Celtics scout Ed Badger, who urged team brass to claim the elite small forward in the approaching 1986 NBA draft. The Celtics had dealt for the Supersonics' first-round selection two years earlier, affording the defending NBA Champs the overall second pick behind Cleveland. When the Cavaliers claimed Brad Daugherty to fulfill their needs at the center position, Boston had their man.

But the joy in Beantown would last only moments. After flying to Boston for a quick meeting with his new team, Bias returned to his dorm room on the Maryland campus where he and his friends made the fateful decision to celebrate the occasion with cocaine. At 8:55 AM, less than forty-eight hours after his selection by the Boston Celtics, Len Bias was dead of cardiac arrest at the age of twenty-two.

It has been over a decade since Heritage presented The Len Bias Collection to our bidding clientele, including Terrapins gamers and the draft day suit he wore on the brink of his fatal error. That collection did not contain any Championship hardware, however, and we believe this to be the first ever major auction offering.

This ring was awarded to Bias for his efforts in earning the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship during his sophomore season. The ring features a red stone on the face with golden "ACC" lettering with two concentric bands of raised text at the perimeter reading, "1984 Maryland Basketball Atlantic Coast Conference Champions." Left shank attributes the ring to Bias above a "UM" logo and the slogan "Hard Work." Right shank announces, "Terps, 10th National Ranking, 24-8." Interior band is stamped "Celestrium" and measures to a size nine and a half (9.5). Weight is twenty grams (20 g.).
