Description

1980 "Pistol Pete" Maravich Signed Poster. Knowledgeable basketball collectors understand that Maravich signatures are typically seen one of two ways. Most common (though still quite scarce) is the "Pistol Pete" autograph, sans surname, his preferred signature for fans. You'll see it on basketballs, program covers, etc. Then even more rare is the "Pete Maravich" signature, found almost exclusively on checks and other legal documents. Here we offer something infinitely more scarce than either of these variations in the form of a brief note of sorts, reading, "To Mother Cole, My wife Jackie says you are still the best cook--much health and happiness, 'Pistol Pete' Maravich." If we were to see this message on a blank sheet of paper, it would be cause for some celebration--the combination of the tough signature variation and a handwritten note. Finding its home on a fantastic poster such as this one, commemorating Pete's eleven seasons in the N.B.A., it enters yet an even higher realm of desirability. Presented to the wife of a Celtics exec who helped the Maravich family adjust to life in Boston, the poster remains in marvelous condition, with the only evident wear coming in the form of a missing upper left corner that doesn't even extend beyond the white border. The black marker inscription rates a perfect 10/10, though it admittedly competes with the dark contrast of the poster itself. This is a minor concern, however, when faced with the tremendous appeal of this singularly unique artifact. LOA from Steve Grad & Zach Rullo/ PSA DNA.
