1980-83 Julius Erving Game Worn & Signed Converse "Pro Leather" Sneakers. Adidas "Abdul-Jabbar" made sneaker history as the first player to endorse basketball sneakers in 1971, combining leather uppers and suede striping with Kareem's signature and likeness on the tongues. In 1973, the "Puma Clyde" debuted with wider soles and "Clyde" stamped on the suede uppers.

But the shoes that ushered in the modern era of basketball footwear were undoubtedly Converse's "Pro Leather" for Dr. J, which debuted in 1976. Erving had actually switched from Adidas to Converse while still in the ABA, when the brand signed him for about $20,000 per year.

Erving symbolized and redefined basketball artistry and showmanship during the 1970's and 80's, first with the Squires and Nets of the ABA and then with the 76ers of the NBA. Any basketball junkie or sneakerphile alive will attest to the fact that the Pro Leather's are inexorably linked to the good Doctor and carried him on his most memorable flights into basketball lore - the free throw line dunk at the 1976 Slam Dunk Contest, the tomahawk dunk over Bill Walton in the 1977 Finals, the famed 1970's Converse poster where his biceps are bulging, and the cuff-dunk over Michael Cooper in 1983.

Offered here are Erving's gamers from the 1980-83 era, with clean white uppers, the Star Chevron logo sewn on in red leather, and "DR. J" in red stencil stamping. Inside flap tags state "Made In USA 15 1/2." The exterior outer ankles of each are signed "Julius "Dr. J" Erving" in NRMT black sharpie. Fine wear and spectacular condition, with no rubber degradation. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from SGC Authentic. Two Full LOAs from PSA/DNA.
