1979-80 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Game Worn & Signed Sneakers with Lakers Employee Provenance--NBA Championship & MVP Season!An included letter of provenance provides the important details:
"I worked part-time in the Los Angeles Lakers promotions & public relations dept at the Forum in 1979-80 and I obtained this pair of game-used Kareem Abdul-Jabbar autographed Adidas shoes directly from the team's equipment staff upon completion of the NBA championship season."
This single season of service by the Lakers staffer could not have come at a more opportune time, as it was this year that the team brought a rookie named Earvin Johnson into the fold, the dawning of an era of protracted NBA dominance that would begin with victory in the 1980 NBA Finals over Dr. J and his fierce Philadelphia 76ers. We should note that Kareem wore this style of shoes in that Finals, and the statement in the letter of provenance that these shoes were acquired after the close of the season certainly augments the probability that they were left behind by the NBA's scoring king after wearing them in that series.
Both individually and collectively (as a member of the Lakers franchise), the 1979-80 season was one of Abdul-Jabbar's finest, adding both a second of six NBA Championship rings and the last of six NBA MVP Awards to his bulging trophy case. He'd score over 2,000 points while leading the league with 280 blocked shots. It was the only season of his career he'd shoot better than three-for-five from the field, and the last he'd play over fifty hours.
