Description
1970 Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar) Original Artwork by LeRoy Neiman. Leroy Neiman and Lew Alcindor were both true rebels in their field and held in the highest regard. Alcindor began his basketball career in New York City and was a prep icon. Following roundball success in high school, the big man went to UCLA where he was tutored by the Wizard of Westwood. He won three NCAA titles and the Bruins finished with an 88-2 record when Alcindor manned the middle. Alcindor took his considerable talents to the professional ranks and helped make the Milwaukee Bucks winners.In Neiman's book Winners: My Thirty Years in Sports, he describes his first encounter with the young center. Neiman was courtside with Bill Bradley who remarked Neiman would need more paper given Alcindor's sheer size.
This original (11.5x16") features Alcindor during the 1970 All-Star Game in The Big Apple. The artwork is noteworthy because it was captured the same year Alcindor helped the Bucks win their only NBA championship to date. It was also right before the superstar changed his name to Kareem Abdul Jabbar. The big man is dressed in his Milwaukee Bucks jersey, sporting full mutton chops, which were so popular during the time period, and a pair of sunglasses. The artwork was featured in Neiman's aforementioned book. Neiman dated his masterpiece "Lew Alcindor March 18, '70 Mad. Sq. garden." This was originally purchased at Bowles/Sorokko Galleries and has their information on back. Framed at 24x28". Light edge wear present.
