Description
The most important collegiate basketball ring that exists!
1967-69 UCLA Bruins NCAA Basketball Championship Ring Presented
to Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar). Only three years are
printed on this special ring but, in fairness, there should really
be four. The best college player in the country in 1966 was Lew
Alcindor, but the freshman rule barred him from joining the varsity
squad, back-to-back national champions ranked number one in the
nation as they opened the new Pauley Pavilion with a scrimmage
against the youngsters.UCLA's frosh downed the NCAA champs by fifteen. The best team in the nation was the second-best on campus.
With the addition of Alcindor to the varsity roster for his 1967 sophomore season, the Bruins went from unstoppable to literally unbeatable, their towering center recording a UCLA single-game record of fifty-six points in his very first contest. He'd graduate in 1969 with a record of 88-2, having led the Bruins to three consecutive NCAA Championships, winning "Most Outstanding Player" honors for each tournament. As a senior, Alcindor would be named the first ever Naismith College Player of the Year.
Set this all against a backdrop of a period in American history that saw the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy, the Moon landing, the Manson murders, and Alcindor's emerging role as a spokesman for the Civil Rights movement, and you are left with a piece of nearly immeasurable historical intrigue. A half-century later we are yet again reminded of the outsized role that sports has played and continues to play in matters of social justice. The ring celebrates an era of both glory and change, and a man central to each.
The ring is sourced directly from Mr. Abdul-Jabbar with his signed letter of provenance, and presents in NRMT condition. A blue stone commands the face of the ring, standing at center of raised text proclaiming "UCLA NCAA Champions." Left shank features the "Bruins" nickname above a figural basketball, while right shank records the three seasons of dominance that Alcindor and legendary coach John Wooden delivered to the City of Angels.
Interior band is engraved, "L.A." and stamped "LGB 10K." Weight is thirty grams (30 g.). Size eleven and a half (11.5). Letter of provenance from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (signature on Letter of Provenance)
