    Description

1951 Marques Haynes MVP Trophy - "Second Place Award" from the Marques Haynes Collection. In 1951, after the success of the inaugural year before, the Harlem Globetrotters resumed their series of exhibition games versus the College All-Americans. Marques continued to excel and was the critical factor in leading the Globetrotters to victory. However, unlike the 1950 series, when he was named "Most Valuable Globetrotter," in 1951 the award went to his outstanding teammate, Reece "Goose" Tatum. Clearly, Goose had played extremely well and, as usual, entertained the audiences while doing so. However, a number of players on the team felt that Marques should have repeated. Abe Saperstein had wanted to reward and motivate one of his star attractions by giving the MVP award to Goose Tatum (Saperstein held the only vote, incidentally). However, he didn't want to create any dissension within an amazingly successful team. To address the issue, he decided to create the "2nd Place Award - Most Valuable Player" and presented it to Marques Haynes. This was the only time this was ever done. The trophy itself is in outstanding condition, with only a few minor marks on the walnut base and on the shining gold ball. The base where the player is attached to the ball has moderate chipping, with the darker metal showing through. It stands approximately thirty inches high, with a width at the base of approximately sixteen inches. Overall, it remains a beautiful display piece.
