    Description

1940 Harlem Globetrotters Tremendous Photograph. Almost certainly once on display at Chicago Stadium where the image was snapped, this monstrous 22.5x29.5" photo documents an historic moment in Windy City basketball history. The text hand-lettered in white paint at top tells the tale: "A Harry Hannin production, Stadium Record Broken!, 22,401 Fans Witnessed, All-Star Classic, Chicago Stadium - November 29, 1940 - Globetrotters vs. All-Americans." This was the year that the mighty Globetrotters won their first ever NBL Championship, topping the Chicago Bruins in an overtime squeaker. We believe that this image shows the legendary barnstorming squad facing off against the city's best college basketball players, however. The photo remains in remarkably fine condition, with no visible signs of creasing, tearing or staining. The original wooden frame is present and accounted for. Almost certainly the earliest photo of the Globetrotters in action ever made available at public auction, and almost certainly the largest as well. In fact, one would be hard pressed to find a more impressive basketball photo, period.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
