    Description

1915 Luther Gulick Signed Letter--Catalyst for Invention of Basketball. A physician by trade, Luther Gulick (d. 1918) was founding superintendent of the physical education department of the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts when he instructed a teacher named James Naismith to create an indoor sport to be played by students during the winter. The rest, as they say, is basketball history. While Naismith's autograph remains quite rare, even after Heritage Auctions' offering of his personal collection, Gulick is exponentially rarer still, and his signature rates 9/10 at the close of this typed correspondence on letterhead of "The Camp Fire Girls," an organization that educated women to work outside the home. The single 8x10" page exhibits original mailing folds but no other issues of note. Gulick was an inaugural class Naismith Hall of Fame inductee, enshrined over half a century after his passing. Original mailing envelope, typed and rather ragged, is included. Authenticators rule inconclusive due to lack of exemplars.
