1900 Knickerbocker Athletic Club Basketball Medal. The important roles which American athletic clubs, such as the New York Athletic Club and the Knickerbocker Athletic Club, of the late 1800s and early 1900s played in the development of sports in the United States is often overlooked. These organizations provided the national athletic organizations and competitions needed to grow sports at a grass root level.

In 1898, the Knickerbocker Athletic Club became one of the first of the athletic clubs to field a proper competitive basketball squad which entered in tournament play. Interestingly enough, this was the same year that the world's first professional basketball league (National Basketball League) was formed. In 1900, The Knickerbocker Athletic Club won their second Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball title by going 3-0 in the Metropolitan Championship games.

"The Knickerbocker Athletic Club" medal on offer here bears the organizations crest on the front in red and white enamel. The back displays "Basket Ball 1900" in a delightful cursive font of the day. Early basketball artifacts are extremely scarce and this represents the earliest award from a championship team that we have ever seen.
